Garnet is the birthstone for January .
The name “garnet” originates from the medieval Latin granatus, meaning “pomegranate,” in reference to the similarity of the red colour. However Garnet is actually a group of several minerals and comes in a multitude of colours. Five of these minerals Pyrope, Almandine, Spessartine, Grossular and Andradite – are important as gems.
Pyrope and Almandine range from purple to red. Spessartine range from oranges and yellows, while Andradite is mostly yellow to green. Grossular may have the widest range, from colourless through to yellow and reddish orange, as well as a strong vibrant green called Tsavorite

Garnets have been used since the Bronze Age as both gemstones and abrasives.
Garnets throughout the ages was believed to cure many diseases like inflammatory diseases and to soothe the angry heart. In Indian astrology it is believed that Garnet helps eliminate negative feelings (depression, guilt) and instill greater self-confidence and mental clarity to promote creative thinking and peace of mind.

Garnet in more recent years is a gift that is given to people who are travelling as it is seen as a gem that keeps travellers safe and is more commonly given on the 2nd wedding anniversary.
